UPCOMING ON PBS, MARIAN ANDERSON KCTS Channel 9, American Experience: Voice of Freedom. Tune in Monday, February 15 at 9:00 p.m.

Soon after Marian Anderson’s historic 1939 performance in front of a record 75,000 people at The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C, she toured the country to sold-out venues from New York, to San Francisco, to Bellingham! While on her Civic Music Tour, Ms. Anderson sang to our community in the completely sold out Bellingham High School Auditorium on Tuesday evening, March 11, 1941.

Marian Anderson holds a very special place in our hearts, because while in Bellingham, Mrs. Francis Larrabee invited Ms. Anderson to be her guest here, at The Larrabee home, now known as Lairmont.
It was a great honor for Francis –– a music student, herself –– to host Ms. Anderson, the world’s greatest contralto. We feel humbled by both women’s greatness and character.

We invite you to learn more about the inspirational story and life of artist, teacher, icon, and world-famous contralto, Marian Anderson: check out this upcoming KCTS Channel 9 show, American Experience: Voice of Freedom. Watch Monday, February 15, at 9:00 p.m.

American Experience: Voice of Freedom
On Easter Sunday 1939, contralto Marian Anderson stepped up to a microphone in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. As an African American, she had been barred from performing at Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution, and first lady Eleanor Roosevelt publicly resigned her D.A.R. membership in protest. This film tells Anderson’s story, leading up to her landmark performance.
